We are back once again, this time with the newest entry yet, with the first run of the show currently still in previews on broadway. There has been considerable hype surrounding this new musical, with a score by indie pop/rock band The Rescues, and book by Chris Hoch and David Hornsby, and even though its opening night isn't for another few days, it has already garnered a flurry of award nominations, including for 4 Drama League awards and 11 Outer Critics Circle Awards; and since it has its opening night bang on the cut off date for the 79th Tony Awards, it will indeed be eligible for this year's ceremony.

The musical is based on the 1987 cult horror comedy film of the same name by Joel Schumacher, following a mother (Lucy) and her two teenage sons (Michael & Sam), as the family make the move back to Lucy's old home town of Santa Carla, California. Whilst this major life adjustment is being made, eldest son Michael, in the search for purpose in his young life, befriends a group of vampires disguised as a rock band. However after Sam (played by Benjamin Pajak, whom I saw in "The Music Man" back in 2022) meets a duo of brothers who happen to be self-proclaimed "vampire hunters", he realises that he must now save his brother from his new friends.

Whether or not the show will be a major hit remains to be seen, however early indicators point to this being a force in the 2025-26 broadway season, especially with the raw power and personality of the demo tracks released last year, featuring Caissie Levy and Guns 'n' Roses guitarist Slash. And with direction by two-time Tony Award winner Michael Arden, it is odds-on that this will have everyone talking a great deal in the coming months. The question is, premature as it may be, will this new 80s rock inspired musical, like others before it, make the journey across the Atlantic before long? Only time will tell...
